Team Pickles and Peaches takes the Ithacka BOJ Challenge!
How could I say no to this!! From Dorkbyte:
Ithacka Hackerspace from — you guessed it– Ithaca, NY is running a really interesting competition for makers across the country. Using a BOJ (Box of Junk) your team is tasked with creating something, ANYTHING, that is neat and cool and promotes the maker culture. Full details on their site. (via Ithacka)
I immediately went online to American Science and Surplus and bought a box of junk. This is the artists rendering of the box:

I am not even kidding you.
Believe me, I realize how nutty that sounds, but the prospect of making something really fun and interesting out of some unknown components is too good to pass up. Without even skipping a beat, the other half of Team Pickles and Peaches agreed to join the competition. So it’s ON!!!
We’re assembling a team of talented artists, hackers and dreamers. If you want to join us, we’ll be having our first brainstorming meeting in a week or so — once we actually see what’s inside the box. As for rules, here they are:
- All major components must come from the BOJ.
- One BOJ per team.
- Multiple projects are allowed.
- You may use the box itself.
- Project(s) must be documented online, and this documentation submitted for consideration.
- Project(s) must account for at least 75% (by individual pieces) of the contents of the BOJ.
- Project(s) must be completed and submitted to info@ithacka.org by 12:01a ET, August 1, 2010.
- Allowed components from outside the BOJ:
- Fasteners (nuts, bolts, screws, nails, rivets, tape, glue, yarn, string, etc.)
- Controllers (microcontrollers, radio controls, PLUs, motor drivers, relay boards, computers, etc.)
- Power Supplies (electrical: batteries, wall warts, computer PSUs, wall current plugs; mechanical: bikes, steam engines, cars, tractors, etc.)
- Custom Components (3D-printed components, custom machined components, or others that you make yourself from stock only.)
Voting will end August 7, 2010, and a prize will be sent out to the winner by August 10, 2010. Follow the trashtalk on twitter: #ithackaBOJ
I’ll keep you posted on our progress!
